Provides diagnostic assessment and treatment of gastrointestinal tract disorders, that is, diseases that affect the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon, liver, gallbladder, biliary tract and pancreas.
When examining the upper part of the gastrointestinal tract with a gastrofibroscope, a physician can remove a tissue sample for further histology or microbiology testing. During colonoscopy the Gastroenterologist inspects a part of the colon from the anus to the appendix and can also examine the final section of the small intestine, i.e., ileums. The colonoscopy may be useful not only for detecting tumours but also in the discovery of inflammatory colon diseases, polyps, and diverticulosis. Patients have the option of undergoing a colonoscopy under general anaesthesia, in which case the procedure is absolutely painless.
Most common treatments:
Gastric fibroscopy, colonoscopy, rectosigmoidoscopy, polyp removal, treatment of bleeding, oesophageal variceal sclerotherapy and ligation.
